BUNTUS SPORT & PLAY
Buntús – the Official School’s Sports Programme developed and supported by SuperValu and the Irish Sports Council, with the aim of encouraging children to develop a healthy interest in sport from a young age, and to maintain an active lifestyle for longer was recently launched.

School-aged children need opportunities to participate in the sport of their choice at an appropriate level, in a safe and enjoyable environment. Buntús provides those opportunities and opens the door to a life long relationship with sport and physical activity. The programme provides training to all school staff, free child friendly equipment (worth approx €1000) & resource cards to help teachers (& older pupils) use the equipment.
Buntús Start is a comprehensive physical activity programme for children aged 2-5 years old. It has been designed for use in pre-school settings so that pre-school and playgroup leaders can provide a wide range of fun activities for young children.

Buntús Play is aimed primarily at 5-9 year olds. The focus is to aid in the development of basic motor and movement skills. This is done using equipment such as balloon balls and other small sized equipment. Buntús Multi-Sport is aimed at 7-11 year olds. It acts as an introduction to invasion games and net/wall games.

To date LCSP has delivered Buntús Sport & Play to 39 schools over 500 teachers and over 7000 pupils in Limerick City. We would encourage all schools to use this programme to help deliver their PE curriculum.

GO FOR LIFE
What is Go For Life ?

Go for Life is the national programme for Sport and Physical Activity for Older People. The programme aims to involve more older adults in all aspects of physical activity more often - not only participating but also planning and leading sport and physical activity within their own groups.

There are two key strands:
- Active Living aims to get more people involved in health enhancing physical activity. The programme is implemented in partnership with the Health Promotion Officers of the HSE.
- Sport Participation aims to increase participation rates in sport by older people. It is intended that leaders will in turn promote participation in sport amongst the older people in their communities.

PALS WORKSHOPS
Limerick City Sports Partnership in association with Age & Opportunity Ireland are delighted to organise PALs (Physical Activity Leaders) Workshops in Limerick City as part of the Go For Life programme. Keep an eye on the Calendar section for dates of upcoming courses.

To date over 1000 people have attended the Pals’ workshops nationwide. Go for Life, as well as increasing the numbers of older people taking part in sport also increases the number of older people actually leading sport.

GYM Inc
GYM Inc was developed in association with UL & local disability agencies in order to develop an accessible and educational programme for people with disabilities on gym access and participation benefits. The project aims to target people with disabilities who are often excluded from participation opportunities for a variety of reasons e.g. lack of programmes catering for their needs, inaccessible facilities, cost etc.

Since Gym Inc got off the ground the feedback from participants has been very positive. One participant who is a wheelchair user stated they never realised they could do so many activities in a gym and were delighted that they could participate in a variety of exercises suitable to their own unique ability.

A variety of equipment was used by the Gym Inc participants during the session. This equipment included treadmills, bikes (including wheelchair accessible bikes), arm ergometer, free weights and weight training machines as well as participating in flexibility and toning exercises.

A key part to the success of the Gym Inc programme is that each individual participates in an exercise and activity programme that is suitable to them and their individual ability thus everybody’s physical activity needs are provided for. The UL Arena is the perfect location to run such a programme in Limerick city. Apart from been a fully accessible world-class facility, the management and staff at the Arena are dedicated and highly supportive towards the inclusive use of the facilities for all persons regardless of their abilities and physical activity needs.

SWIM-INC
Swim Inc (or Swimming Inclusive in full) is a pilot programme for 5-10 year old children with disabilities in the Limerick city area, developed to teach skills conducive to participating in adapted sports sessions in a fun and supportive environment. Many of the activities these young people experience in their educational and other settings are often for therapeutic purposes, with Swim Inc being developed to offer a sporting alternative. A 9 week pilot for 8 children and their parents (accompanying them in the water) was developed by the Swim Inc team with the University Arena pool providing support in terms of the venue.

The primary aim of the pilot was to ascertain whether there was actual demand for such a programme in the Limerick city area and if so, how such a programme could be run successfully. Sarah Meegan, sport scientist and teacher on the Swim Inc team says ‘I can’t tell you how delighted I am that this opportunity now exists and, will continue to exist, for these children. Seeing the expressions on their faces as they splash about in the water is highly rewarding. Our aim is to help participants improve their confidence and movement ability in the water; to suggest activities that can be practiced in public recreation swim sessions; to further develop a format of classes suitable for this target group and; to produce a plan to encourage participants to swim regularly after the lessons. We are certainly getting there.’

Swim Inc arose from a need identified by a local physiotherapist and sports scientist, both of whom specialise in adapted physical activity and, have working knowledge of what is available in Limerick for this target group. A partnership was formed with Limerick City Sports Partnership who pulled together a project proposal for funding of €3000 from the Irish Sports Council for a pilot adapted physical activity programme for children, under the key strategic area of Active Limerick – To deliver and promote programmes for health-enhancing physical activity. UL PE & Sport Science students got involved as volunteer water assistants on the programme and ensured that as part of the team, the pilot programme was a great success.

For details of swimming opportunities for people with a disability please go to the Directory section of this website.
