| INTERNATIONAL STRONGMAN EVENT LAUNCHED IN IRELAND |
| -Strongman Champions League Ireland to attract thousands of fans to County Limerick |
Limerick is set to become home to an annual international sports event Strongman Champions League Ireland and a national sports exhibition, Sports Expo Ireland organised by Danesfort Event Management Ltd.
Danesfort Event Management today announced details of the country’s first ever leg of the Strongman Champions League event, Strongman Champions League Ireland and Sports Expo Ireland, will take place at Limerick Race Course in Co. Limerick on Saturday and Sunday, June 5th -6th 2010.
The event organisers have attracted 16 of the Worlds Strongest Men including the reigning Worlds Strongest Man Zydrunas Savickas from Lithuania. Zydrunas Savickas is among 10 athletes who competed at the Worlds Strongest Man in Malta recently to come and compete in the competition, we have also attracted sports clubs, organisations and national bodies to participate at Sports Expo Ireland, bringing up to 1.5 million euro into the local economy. The international strongman event, which is being marketed nationally and internationally, already has 16 agreements with television stations across Europe, Russia and the Middle East. The event is a great platform to promote Limerick city and county to an international audience. Danesfort Event Management has already signed Batchelors as the events main sponsor.
As well as Strongman Champions League Ireland and Sports Expo Ireland Danesfort Event Management is also running St Patricks Strongman Challenge on Sunday March 14th at Sean Choil Sports Complex in Limerick. This one day competition sees four two man teams from Ireland, England, Scotland and Poland taking part. There will be 4 athletes from the 2009 Worlds Strongest Man taking part in St Patricks Strongman Challenge.
Speaking at today’s event launch in Limerick Race Course, County Limerick, Gary Kirwan of Danesfort Event Management said: “It is a great accomplishment to attract such a significant international event to Ireland. Our aim is to establish the event as a major fixture on the Irish sporting calendar. The event will deliver a significant boost to the local economy worth 1.5 million euro to the city and county. Strongman Champions League Ireland will be seen across Europe, Russia and the Middle East and will be a great advertisement for Limerick. Strongman Champions League was seen by over 82 million people per event in 2008 and has continued to grow. We are also concentrating on attracting television stations in Ireland, England and America to broadcast the event.”
Mr. Kirwan continued: “Strongman Champions League Ireland is Ireland's largest strongman competition. It affords the public a unique opportunity to see the strongest men in the world compete in the flesh. With Strongman Champions League Ireland and Sports Expo Ireland running together we expect to draw enthusiasts, the health conscious, sports people and the curious among us. We have already signed Batchelors as the main sponsor for the event which I feel is a reflection of the events potential. This year we are hoping to attract as many as 14,000 over the two days and plan to grow this family event to 20,000 by 2014. Our ultimate goal is to bring the Worlds Strongest Man Competition to Ireland in the next 5 years by steadily building the sports image in Ireland. We have already held preliminary talk’s with IMG World who own the Worlds Strongest Man competition”.
Welcoming the event Dr. Vincent Cunnane, Chief Executive, Shannon Development said, “Shannon Development is delighted to have supported this great sporting event for the Shannon Region. We are currently undertaking a major drive to develop sports business and tourism for the City and this event will build on Limerick’s reputation as Ireland’s sport’s capital. It is part of Shannon Development’s strategy to attract events that will be here on an annual basis and this type of legacy event, which has potential to be an annual event for Limerick, is a perfect fit with what we are trying to do throughout the Shannon Region.
You don’t have to go too far in Limerick to find superb venues like the Limerick Race Course, Thomond Park, the Gaelic Grounds, the sports facilities at the University of Limerick, the new Greyhound stadium and others. It is with confidence therefore that we welcome this high profile televised event to Limerick for the first time, for what we are sure will be a marvellous occasion.”
Karen Brosnahan of the Shannon Region Conference and Sports Bureau, noted: “Sports Tourism generates approximately 60 million euro for the Shannon Region annually. We, along with Shannon Development, have recently launched a Sports Ambassador Programme to capitalise on this lucrative market even further by getting local people involved in sport to help bid for events like Strongman Champions League that can become legacy events for the entire Shannon Region."
Strongman Champions League Ireland and Sports Expo Ireland was launched today at an event in Limerick Race Course, Patrickswell, Co Limerick, which was attended by media outlets from throughout Ireland and the United Kingdom. A number of attending journalists also watched The Republic of Irelands Strongest Man James Fennelly dead lifting a car.
Linda Sheehan, Batchelors “Batchelors is delighted to be associated with the Strongman Champions League. This unique sporting event will feature feats of strength and endurance from some of the world’s strongest men. It is an ideal family outing in one of Ireland’s greatest sporting cities. We believe that the Strongman Champions League in Ireland will become a major fixture on the Irish sporting calendar.
Russell Ferris, Manager of Limerick Race Course “Limerick race course is delighted to be hosting the Strongman Man Champions League Ireland and Sports Expo Ireland on the 5th & 6th June, it will be a fantastic event and another opportunity to showcase the sporting prowess of Limerick on a national and international scale. To have the World’s Strongest Man compete in the event brings a different dimension to the competition and will most certainly add to the allure of the weekend. I’m sure the people of Ireland will be as excited by the event as we are and look forward to a weekend of fun and entertainment”.

| SAM VISITS ST. MARY’S PRIMARY SCHOOLS |
| | |
| | |
St. Mary’s Regeneration Agency and Limerick City Sports Partnership combined to organise a visit of the famous Sam Maguire Cup to the St. Mary’s Girls and Boys Primary Schools in the King’s Island area last Monday. This visit coincides with the recent launch of the St. Mary’s/St.Nicholas’ Community Games. St. Mary’s had previously entered the Community Games, but had not participated in recent years.
The boys and girls of both schools were very excited with the visit, and had their photographs taken with the famous trophy. Both school principals welcomed the visits and both were high in their praise of the Kerry County Board, who facilitated this visit.
St. Mary’s/St. Nicholas’ Community Games are up and running at the moment, and already the Art and Modelmaking Sections have been judged and the area will be represented at the county finals to be held shortly.
The handball is also at a competitive level, and it is very pleasing to see handball returning to an area that was considered very strong not too long ago
All the other sports, which are predominantly outdoor, will be kicking off shortly, and these include girls Gaelic football, rugby and athletics.
If you want to get involved call the PRO, Christy McInerney, 087-7440305, or any member of the committee.

| Primary Schools Handball Initiative: |
| | |
| | |
Limerick City Primary Schools are presently benefitting from top class handball coaching from one of the best handball coaches in the country. Donal Hayes, from Cappagh, County Limerick, has recently been appointed by the County Handball Board to form a structured coaching initiative for primary schools in the Limerick City area. With funding coming for the part-time coaching position from the Limerick Regeneration Agency, the long-term strategy is to re-establish handball as a competitive sport in the inner city.
Donal has been in a number of primary schools recently passing on his expertise to the pupils, and he has unearthed some very promising talent in a very short time. The Limerick City Sports Partnership are working with Donal to organise internal competitions in the participating schools. All these schools will have completed their competitions within the next week or so.
The intention is to establish a team to represent each school and to hold a city-wide League, with the final to be played between the winning teams from the North and Southside of the city at the start of December.
The coach will then concentrate on the secondary schools, and will follow a similar process, with the final of the secondary schools fixed for the middle of January in 2010.
Donal is very positive about the future of handball within the city, and he hopes to restore the game to the heights achieved in the 70s and 80s, when Limerick boasted several All-Ireland champions and the game was played by communities all over the city.
The Limerick City Sports Partnership are facilitating the restoration of handball in the city with the help of the IHC, Limerick County Handball Board and Limerick Regeneration Agency.

| Coaching success uncovered at Mid West Sports Conference |
A number of the countries leading sports coaches and experts will participate in a major sports conference hosted in Thomond Park Stadium. Ireland’s Grand Slam winning coach Declan Kidney will be joined by the National Director of the English Institute of Sport and RTE analyst Conor O’Shea along with leading sports psychologist and former Armagh footballer Enda McNulty. The BDO Get BACk Challenge Sports and Coaching Conference will be held on Thursday 22nd October at 7.30pm. Proceeds from the event will be contributed to Special Olympics Ireland who will host the 2010 national games in Limerick. The conference is organised in association with the Mid West Local Sports Partnerships.
Speaking at the launch of the conference Brian McGann, BDO Simpson Xavier explained “the conference is one of two major events we organise annually through the BDO Get BACk Challenge. The last two sports conferences attracted almost 1,000 coaches and parents to listen to some of the most renowned experts in the area of coach practice and development. This year we are delighted to welcome national rugby coach Declan Kidney back to Limerick to share his thoughts on coaching. Apart from the obvious Grand Slam win, one of the most memorable moments during the euphoria of the team’s success was Declan’s recognition of the work on the ground by coaches and parents around the country.”
Brian McGann added “we will also have an opportunity to listen to examples of best practice in coaching being examined in the UK and Europe through Conor O’Shea. Conor brings a unique insight as former international player and now through his role at the English Institute of Sport. Enda McNulty, an All Ireland medal winner with Armagh has developed one of the fastest growing reputations as a sports psychologist having worked with some of the country’s leading sports people and teams.”
Elaine Barry, Coordinator with the Limerick City Local Sports Partnership outlined the coaching benefits of such events. “Coach Education is one of the key focuses for development among the Local Sports Partnerships particularly for those working with young people. The opportunity to listen to experts who work day in and day out developing new approaches to team and individual preparation will benefit anyone with any involvement in sports, either as an athlete or as a coach. Last years attendance of almost 600 people across a broad range of sporting codes highlighted the principals of sport preparation remain the same regardless of the sport. “
The Sports Conference is organised through the BDO Get BACk Challenge which raises funds for Mid West hospice home care programmes and also funding sports participation programmes for socially disadvantaged children as part of its efforts to raise awareness of the cancer linkages between inactivity, overweight and obesity. In the past four years of the event €650,000 has been raised through an annual charity cycle and walk with the involvement of three time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond. The BDO Get BACk Challenge is organised in association with a range of event partners that include Adidas, AIB, Aer Arann, Bank of Ireland, Brooks Properties, Bloxhams, GECAS, Doonbeg Golf Club, Hard Rock Cafes, Kemmy Business School UL, Leahy & Partners Solicitors, Limerick Southside & Northside Regeneration Agency and Sweeney McGann Solicitors.
Admission to the event is by pre booked ticket only. Bookings can be made through the Thomond Park box office on 061-421103 or online at www.thomondpark.ie. Tickets are on sale at €20 each or clubs can avail of the special club offer of six tickets for a €100.

Matt Turner, Jamie O’Donovan, Ger O’Riordan and Danny Turner, all part of the Limerick Youth Services, and Eoin McInerney, their leader, competed and completed their first Novice Try-athlon last week end in the Joey Hannan Memorial Triathlon and were delighted with their achievement.
The five lads got their first taste of triathlon only a few weeks ago when they joined an 8-week programme organized by Tracy Mahedy from the Limerick City Sports Partnership. Tracy organized a training programme for them in the University Arena, including swimming and gym work. Tracy commended the participants on their dedication: “The five boys are really motivated and discovered a sport they did not know and now really enjoy”.
Limerick Triathlon club were very supportive of such enthusiasm and offered a free membership to the five successful participants to join the club. Full race report with photos are now up on the club website: www.limericktriathlon.com.

| HANDBALL IS BACK IN LIMERICK |
| | |
| | |
HANDBALL IS BACK IN LIMERICK
Limerick City was traditionally strong in the sport of Handball, with areas such as Kileely, St. Mary’s Park and Prospect/Weston boasting some very prominent players.
However due to lack of club structure & facilities the sport had been in decline over the past decade.
Limerick City Sports Partnership, the Irish Handball Council and the Limerick Regeneration Agency got involved in a new initiative to help rejuvenate the game of Handball over the past few months.
The results are fantastic; a Handball club will be shortly set up on the Southside. A Handball ally has been built in Southill, where anyone who adheres to the rules of the game is welcome to play. City-wide youth competitions are taking place with the final to be held on Thursday 12th March from 5.30-6.30pm in Southill Area Centre.
The primary schools have been contacted and offered a foundation level Handball coaching course for the teachers with the intention to form a schools league.
Anybody interested in getting involved in bringing the game of handball back to its former status in Limerick, can contact us at info@limerickcitysports.ie, or call 061-468542.

| Launch of Limerick City Second Sports Strategy |
Munster Rugby player, Jerry Flannery joined John Treacy of the Irish Sports Council for the launch of the second ‘Sport & Physical Activity Strategic Plan’ for Limerick City.
Elaine Barry, the Coordinator of The Limerick City Sports Partnership commented ‘The staff and board members of the Partnership are honoured that such a talented local athlete wants to endorse this, our second strategic plan. The document is an important step in helping us to strengthen and broaden the appeal of sport across all age groups. It builds on the progress achieved in the last strategic phase, which made a great start on what I envisage to be a long term strategy for increased participation in Sport and Physical Activity”.
The Limerick City Sports Partnership Sport & Physical Activity Strategic Plan 2007-2012 was officially launched by Mr. John Treacy of the Irish Sports Council on Monday April 21st at The Marriott Hotel, Limerick. The Launch was attended by representatives from both voluntary and statutory organisations in Limerick, along with members of the business community.
